The plan by the Kenya government to give drug users free needles will backfire to a large extent.

It appears that the Kenya  government is not aware of the undesirable ramifications of its plan to give drug users free needles.

One is that many more people will be attracted to the vice as this gesture by the government will be taken to mean  that it recognizes ‘responsible drug abuse’.

The move has another negative consequence: While  many may survive dying  of  AIDS as a result of  reduced instances of needle- sharing, the same people may not survive dying  from overdose and overuse.

These two reasons should convince the government to rethink the plan and consider the most viable way to help drug users.

The apparent foolproof method to employ is to combine rehabilitation with ‘one- user-one-needle’ method.
